2011 El Salvador Students
Growing up in rural El Salvador has always been very difficult. Trying to get an education beyond grammar school has been, up to now, nearly impossible. As subsistence farmers, the families our kids come from barely grow enough food to feed their own families. But the kids in our program have a dream for a better future. They simple want a chance to develop their gifts and contribute to their families and their society. I am always amazed at what they tell us: they want to get an education so they can be a part of transforming their country into one where kids can get an education, where everyone has enough to eat, and if you need a doctor or nurse, there will be one available to you. Their hopes for their own personal future are really bound up in their hopes for a better life for all Salvadorans. For all of us, it is a beautiful thing to be a part of.
2011 Brophy Students
The guys on this year’s trip are really awesome! Teachers at Brophy marvel at what a great group we’ve put together this year. These guys are smart, talented, committed to service, and open to growth. They have demonstrated through their three years at Brophy that they have what it takes to be real leaders who can get things done. The motto for this experience is “Throw yourself in 100%, 100% of the time.” This is the challenge set before them, and to a man, they have responded in amazing fashion. Our hope for them, as always, is that their journey will open their hearts and minds to the reality faced by so many in the human family and give them a sense of direction into the future.
